The Stud

We now have a closed kennel and do not offer stud service to outside bitches.

In breeding we want to build up a foundation of good, dominant genes, so we breed bitches to dogs that carry the same gene of characteristics. A pre-potent dog is able to pass along his good characteristics, but his litter brother may not possess this power of transmission even though he is a fairly good representative of the breed. Therefore, it helps to see the progeny of the stud dog to determine what characteristics he does transmit.

If you line breed on certain bloodlines, you will establish a type and be token, by breeding back to the same bloodlines, you are also perpetuating the same faults which are bound to crop up in each generation. We watch our puppies of choice and wait many months until we are sure how they will mature. This takes time and patience. This is done with our heads as it is very easy to be influenced by our hearts.

The number of puppies in a litter is controlled by the bitch. The number of male puppies is controlled by the male.

Whether you plan to breed your bitch to one of your own stud dogs or take her to someone else’s stud, you should have had her hips and elbows OFA, eyes Optigen tested and get a brucellosos test. Brucellosis is a bacterial disease that is sexually transmitted. This should be done 2-3 weeks before she comes into season. Stud dogs should be tested twice a year.
